Interview September 4, 2012

Part of the interview by Harold Donkin

HD: Your book is gaining more and more popularity. How do you feel about this?

MK: Like any other author who is starting to make some success. Overjoyed? not yet, but certainly hopeful and happy.

HD: there are six main characters in the book. Which one is your favourite?

MK: I have always liked Tokutei, maybe because that I made him almost flawless. In fiction, there  were always stories about samurais or warriors who sacrificed their life for the love of martial arts. In this case, Tokutei had no choice. He was simply raised that way. He and other Dragons were raised in such a way that they had to spend most of their life on harsh training, but as a result they served their country in a good way. I love almost everything about Tokutei and his constant rivalry with Lian.  You see they are both trained in numerous martial arts styles, and Tokutei has always been the best, now when there is someone matching his masterfulness, he tries to prove that he is still the one.

HD: Tell me something about this “Surya character”

MK: Surya is a specific character.

HD: what do you mean?

MK: Well, to start with, she is not human and she is not a vampire either. She is, so called, a dhampir, which is a creature whose one of the parents is a vampire. In her case, her mother was raped by a  vampire. She was raised in a such a way to hate all the vampires and help humans fight them. However, humans didn’t approve of her and she had to live on her own. After she is recruited by Arthur, you can see the conflict between Dan and her. He can’t stand any of the vampiric creature and he simply cannot accept her. This conflict can be seen almost everywhere.

HD: Something like a confilcit between Tokutei and Lian?

MK: not exactly, because Tokutei and Lian tolerates each other. They only compete to prove who is the best one.

HD: Rumors has it that there is going to be Book 3. Is it true?

MK: Yes. It was way back when I was researching the info for my first book, I found so many amazing things that I couldn’t possibly fit it all in one, or two books. If the story gets popular, Book three will not be the end for sure.

HD: Is it true that you wrote most of the Book 0 on your mobile?

MK: hehe, yes it is. I am a teacher and every time I had a break or a free period, I tried to write at least  50-100 words. Moreover, whenever I was traveling by train, or bus I added more and more content. Of course the version that was produced on my mobile is 3/5 of what can be read today. I had to do the editing, and one year later, the second editing and the third one, which actually lengthened my book by 1/5.

HD: the first part of your work is available. Can you tell us something about the locations of the other parts?

MK: If you have already read the first part, you can see the short synopsis of the second one, which takes place also in the US. The third part takes us to the far North to the island of Svalbard to a ghost town of Pyramiden. The forth one is in Attica prison in the USA, and the last one is set in Bangkok, Thailand.

HD: what about the settings in book 2?

MK: I can only say that almost everything is set in San Fransisco in Maldito Castle.

HD: OK, we have time for the last question.

MK: go on

HD: How would you react if you got an offer to turn your book into a movie? Would you agree to it?

MK: of course I would, but under one condition. I will work on the movie as well. I mean I don’t want the director to change the movie as much as they did with Dan Brown’s books. I would like to cooperate and give useful advise. Otherwise, I would not agree.

Interview March 15, 2012

Interview by a local newspaper- March 15, 2012 (translated into English)

In: I am here with the local author Michael Keyth

MK: Good afternoon

In: It isn’t your real name, is it?

MK: No, Michael Keyth is my pen name derived from my name and nickname

In: You are currently re-editing your novel A.S.A.T.  What does A.S.A.T. stand for?

MK: Anti-Supernatural Assault Team

In: from the title I may presume it is some kind of a horror?

MK: That is correct, but I also stuffed it with lots of action, suspense and adventure

In: Your book is getting quite popular on the Internet. Tell us, what it is about

MK: A.S.A.T. is a special team created by a billionaire Arthur West. His wife had been killed by a demon, and thus he devotes his life to fight all the supernatural and paranormal creatures.  During his research he learned that one of the demons is responsible for the end of the world in 2012.

In: Could you tell us something more about the demon.

MK: Hmm. During my research for the book, I read some old texts. We know that the Mayan calendar is due to end on 21st December 2012, but we do not exactly know what would happen then. It may be the end of the world or it may be some kind of revolution, religious, technological, extraterrestrial or more likely nothing may happen then. I tried to use this in my book. I researched the Mayan religion and their gods. They had one god Cizin, who was their god of death. In some other text, Testament of Solomon, I found out that King Solomon received a special seal, so called Seal of Solomon. He used it to capture 72 demons. I used and combined these stories. In A.S.A.T. King Solomon couldn’t find the last, 73rd demon- Cizin, who is responsible of the end of the world in 2012. The only way to stop him is to find the Seal and lock him.

In: where is this Seal?

MK: the Seal has been broken by Cizin into 5 pieces and the most powerful paranormal beings own each piece.

In: could you tell us something more about the plot?

MK: Let me think. The book is divided into 5 parts, each part deals with one piece of the Seal and each part is different. We can see how the team struggles to get each piece and what they are willing to do not to fail. Each story has different flashbacks that will help readers put all the pieces of the story together. I’m afraid I can’t tell you more.

In: Ok, so tell us something about the origins of the book and how you decided to write something like that.

MK: well, whenever I watched a TV series, movies or read a book, there was always something missing. Something I would like to add, to see or to read. In the very beginning I wanted to see a great battle between supernatural world and the humans, with numerous different creatures. I always imagined a huge castle on an island that must be defended from thousands of invaders. Then I started to gather all the ideas to turn it into a book. However, during my long research I decided to put the great battle into the second book.

In: where did you get an idea for the team itself:

MK: I’m not going to talk about each character yet, but the whole idea for the team came from Supernatural TV series. Before I saw the pilot, I imagined that Dan and Sam would have cutting edge technology to deal with the supernatural creatures that they would work for an agency or something.  It turned out nothing to be true, so I decided to use my expectation in the book.

In: Why have you decided to write in English even though you’re Polish.

MK: about 8 years ago, I tried to write a romance in Polish, but Polish language doesn’t have so many words as the English one. You see in English, to me, everything sounds better, so I decided to write it in English. It’s still easier for me to write in English than in Polish even though I’m aware of the mistakes I make.

In: what about vocabulary, did you haveany difficulties with it?

MK: Of course I did. I tried to use a sophisticated creative language, like many other authors use, and, of course I had to look up lots of words.  But still, my style is different from native speakers’ and you can see it in the book.

In: I may only say good luck with your novel, Michael. I hope to read it when I polish up my English.

After Reading Book 0 your are taken to Book 1. The story takes place a week later and is divided into five chapters. Each chapter regards one piece of the Seal of Solomon that the team struggles to retrieve. And that’s all I can reveal about the plot. There are six characters, completely different, and the difference does nothing but conflicts between them. My favourite one is Tokutei, a martial arts master who even though has his code, he constantly tries to prove he’s better than the others and does everything his own way, which many a time jeopardizes the missions. The book is full of unexpected twists which create that “WOW” while reading. I liked the fact that it doesn’t take place in one place, but the team travels to a prison, north Europe and some other places around the USA. The language isn’t difficult so the targeted audience is well chosen- young adults. If you love constant action, fights, zombies, vampires and other paranormalia, this book is definitely for you. Make sure to read Book 0 first, without it you may get lost in the first part.  My mark 4,5/5.
